Widener Sweeps Shorewomen
Carbutt Homers in Game Two Loss

CHESTER, PA -- Widener University won both ends of a non-conference softball double-header against visiting Washington College tonight in Chester, PA. The Pride (14-10) won game one, 4-1, and the second game, 6-3.

The Shorewomen (8-11) got on the board first in the opener when freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) singled and later scored on a single by sophomore designated player Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) in the top of the fourth. The Pride responded by scoring all four of its runs in the bottom half of the inning. Katie Mitchell hit a two-run single to start Widener's scoring. Meg Phillips then drove in a run with a ground out and Erika Palchoski scored on an error.

Stephanie Caulford went 3-for-3 in the opener for Widener. Kim Dougherty got the win for the Pride, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in four innings. Christine Bradley picked up the save, allowing no runs on two hits in three innings. WC senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) pitched well in the loss, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings.

Widener jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Steph Connolly drove in the first run with a double. Caitlin Callahan scored on a passed ball and Caulford hit an RBI single to give the Pride a three-run lead. Mitchell drove in Widener's final two runs of the inning with a two-run double. Washington freshman left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) drove in a run with a single in the top of the fourth to put the Shorewomen on the board, but the Pride got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Connolly. Washington freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) hit a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.

Callahan, Connolly, and Caulford each had two hits in the second game for Widener. Kelsey Shultz got the win, allowing one run on three hits in four innings, while Emily Donnelly got the save, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in three innings. Tryhubenko and Snover each had two hits for the Shorewomen. Freshman pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) picked up the loss, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at Muhlenberg.
