23, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) tossed a complete game shutout in game one and broke four school records in the process as Washington College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader over its Delmarva rival Wesley on Thursday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen won game one, 13-0 in five innings, and captured victory in game two, 10-2, in six innings with both games ending due to the eight-run rule. The Shorewomen improve to 15-19-1 on the season, while the Wolverines fall to 7-20. Adams set WC's all-time marks in appearances (74) and innings pitched (373). She set the Shorewoman single-season marks in strikeouts (68) and appearances (25). The all-time and single-season appearance records and career innings pitched were previously held by Allison Weisbrod. Weisbrod had 24 appearances in 1999 and for her career had 73 appearances and tossed 371.2 innings. The strikeout record was held prior by Michelle Laque, who struck out 64 batters in 2005. Also putting her name into the record book was freshman Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) as she is now the all-time leader for hits in a season (52). Before Carbutt, Nicole Maccari held the record with 48 hits in 1999. In the twinbill, she was 4-for-6 with five runs scored. Washington wasted little time in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Carbutt, who entered today's first game tied for the most hits in a single season with 48, singled to right field for her 49th hit of 2009 and became the single season hit leader at Washington. Carbutt would come around to score on a three-run home run to right off the bat of freshman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park). Adams set the school's single season strikeout mark when she fanned Keeyana Talley looking for the first out of the second inning. Washington would tack on one run in the bottom of the second to lead 4-0. The Shorewomen busted the game open with a seven-run third inning. WC got an two-run triple from freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and a two-run home run by fellow classmate, Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) to highlight the seven-run outburst and take an 11-0 lead. Devaud had an RBI double in the fourth that knocked in two to put Washington up 13-0 and that would be the final score. The game was called after Wesley's turn to bat in the top of fifth due to the eight-run rule. Sophomore Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) had a game-best three hits in the opener. Carbutt had three runs scored and two hits, Devaud had four RBI and two hits, Ripple had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Adams and freshmen Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) and Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) all had two hits each, while freshman Shannon Stocklin (Elkins Park, PA/Mount St. Joseph) scored two runs. Adams got the win in the circle to improve to 10-9. She struck out six in the win and gave up just two hits in going the distance for the 12th time. For the Wolverines, Megan Street takes the loss and falls to 5-11. In game two, the Shorewomen put five on the board in the bottom of the first to grab a 5-0 lead. Snover walked in Carbutt for the first run of the game. WC would score its next two runs on wild pitches that plated Devaud and Ripple to extend the lead to 3-0. Freshman Kat Plavnick (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) capped the inning with a two-run two-base hit to right-center that drove in both Snover and Rohde. Wesley got solo home runs from Street in the top of the second and Carmen Walsh in the fourth to trim Washington's lead to 5-2. The Shorewomen responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own to take a 7-2 lead. Ripple singled in Carbutt and Rohde plated Devaud on a base hit. Washington would end the twinbill with a three-run bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule. Ripple led off the frame with a single and advanced to third on a Wolverine fielding error off the bat of Snover. The next batter, Rohde ended the contest with a three-run blast to left field to give Washington a 10-2 win and a sweep of the two-fer. Rohde was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored in game two to lead the Washington assault. Also getting two hits were Carbutt and Ripple. Carbutt, Ripple and Snover in addition to Rohde all scored two runs apiece. Plavnick plated two runs in the nightcap. For the doubleheader, Devaud, Rohde and Snover all tallied four RBI in the sweep. Freshman pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the win and improves to 5-9. She threw her ninth complete game of 2009, striking out seven and allowing just three hits and two runs in the win. Wesley's McKenzie Davis took the loss and drops to 0-1. The Shorewomen finish off their 2009 campaign with a 1:30 p.m. twinbill at Eastern Shore rival Salisbury. |
