8, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Ursinus College won both ends of a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader over host Washington College this afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Bears (19-5, 6-0 Centennial) won game one, 7-1, and downed the Shorewomen (8-15, 0-8 CC), 12-1, in five innings in the second game. In game one, the Bears scored three in the third inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Katie Gallagher led off the top of the frame with a double and would score on a single by Jennie Moore. Moore would steal second base and come around to make it 2-0 off of a two-bagger by Kait Sutherland. Ursinus capped off the three run inning when Sutherland scored on a single by Kristen Gallagher. Ursinus added two more in the fourth after the first two batters had been retired. Kelly Kalovack knocked in Moore on a single and would come around to score herself on a double by Sutherland. Washington would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) homered for the third time this season down the left field line to cut the vistors' lead to 5-1. The Bears would increase the lead to 7-1 with a two-run sixth inning. Lauren Davis picked up the victory for the Bears in game one to go to 18-5 on the season. She went the distance as she struck out eight, allowed just three hits and one earned run. Moore and Sutherland each had three hits and scored two runs with Sutherland driving in three teammates in the opener. Kristen Gallagher and Kalovack each pounded out two hits for the Bears. For the Shorewomen, Devaud was 2-for-3 with a home run. In the circle, freshman Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) took the loss, despite tossing her sixth complete game of the season and falls to 2-7. In game two, Ursinus scored three unearned runs in the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Bears tacked on one more in the second to lead 4-0 and used three Washington errors to score two unearned runs and lead 6-0. The Bears tacked on four in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 12-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. Devaud hit her second home run of the doubleheader to lead off the bottom of the fifth to get the Shorewomen on the board and provide the final margin. For Ursinus in game two, Liz Lowes was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Kate Kehoe drove in four Bears and chalked up two hits. Sutherland was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Abby Sido was 2-for-3 with two RBI. In the circle, Davis got the win to improve to 19-5. She struck out five and allowed just four hits. For Washington, Devaud was 2-for-2 with her fourth longball of the season. Senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss and falls to 6-7. The Shorewomen return to action Friday when they host Gettysburg for a 3:30 p.m. Centennial twin bill. |
