16, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) tossed a complete game shutout in game one and freshman hurler Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) went the distance in game two as host Washington College swept a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader from Swarthmore on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Washington College. The Shorewomen won game one, 1-0, and triumphed in game two 4-1. The Shorewomen are now 10-16-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the conference, while the Garnet slip to 11-16 and 1-7 respectively. It was the first sweep for Washington over Swarthmore since 2003. In game one, the Shorewomen scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the third. Freshman Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by fellow classmate Margaret Rohde (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) and a Swarthmore fielding error. Carbutt crossed home plate on an RBI groundout by freshman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park). The Garnet would get a runner to second base in the second, fourth and sixth innings, but could not score. Swarthmore got the leadoff runner on in the top of the seventh, but she was stranded at first when Adams got Michele Perch to ground out to first base to end the game. Adams struck out four, allowed just two hits and walked none in tossing her ninth complete game of the campaign. She is now 7-8 on the season. Carbutt was 1-for-2 with a run scored and drew a walk at the plate for Washington. Swarthmore's Kathryn Riley took the loss, falling to 7-6, depsite tossing her 11th complete game of 2009. She struck out seven, allowed four hits and one unearned run, while walking just one batter. No Swarthmore runner got beyond second base in the first game. In game two, Washington scored the first run of the nightcap in the bottom of the second to grab a 1-0 lead when freshman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) doubled home Snover. Swarthmore knotted the affair at 1-1 when Lauren Marczi scored on a two-bagger off the bat of Kira Kern in the top of the third. The Shorewomen plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Rohde made it 2-1 when she scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) made it 3-1 when she scored on an errant throw by the Garnet. Washington scored the final run of game two when Rohde singled in freshman Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) on a single hit up the middle. Kimme finished off the game and sweep by getting Maggie Vizcarra to strike out swinging. Kimme picked up the win and improves to 3-7 on the season. She scattered six hits, struck out five, walked one and gave up just one run in going the distance for the seventh time this season. At the dish, Ripple was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win. Swarthmore hurler, Alexandra Zelaski took the loss and falls to 3-9. She went the entire way for the seventh time in 2009, strking out five and giving up four hits. She allowed four runs, three earned. At the plate, Marczi was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Washington returns to action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. conference road doubleheader at Dickinson. |
