21, 2009 OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Visting Washington College and host Stevenson University split a softball doubleheader this afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium. The Mustangs pulled out a 5-3 win in the opener, while Shorewomen grabbed the second game in eight innings by an 8-7 victory. Washington is now 8-5 on the season, while Stevenson is 10-8. In game two, Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Freshman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) led off with a home run and fellow classmate Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) scored on a passed ball. The Shorewomen tacked on a single run in the third when freshman Margaret Rohde (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) scored on a sacrifice fly by Ripple. Stevenson cut the Washington lead to 3-1 when Brittani Rynkowski is doubled in by Stacey Rouse in the bottom of the third. The Mustangs cut the deficit to 3-2 on a home run by Lisa Bilski. Trailing 3-2, Stevenson scored three two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3. Bilski ties the game when she scores on a wild pitch. Sarah Moelter puts the hosts ahead 5-3 when she knocks in two on an RBI single. The Shorewomen scored three runs in their half of the seventh to regain the lead at 6-5. Rohde drives in freshman Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) on a single to make it 5-4. Rohde after advancing to second is pinch-ran for by freshman Alex Lating (Havre de Grace, MD/Harford Christian). Lating scores on a two-bagger by Ripple to knot the game at 5-5. With Ripple on third and two out, Devaud's grounder is mishandled by the Stevenson fielder allowing Ripple to score to give Washington the 6-5 lead. The Mustangs evened the score in the bottom half of the frame when Lauren Davis knocks in Laura Bedgar to level the contest at 6-6. In the eighth inning, the game went to the International Tiebreaker Rule. Freshman Kelly Moncure (West Point, VA/West Point), who started the inning on second base, reached third on a sac bunt by sophomore Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) and scores on a passed ball. Washington's second run of the inning also came on a passed ball which allowed freshman Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to score and make it 8-6. Stevenson got one back in the eighth on Kelly Dorsey's RBI groundout which scored Caitlin Kwedar to cut it to 8-7, but could draw no closer. Senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) picked up the win in relief and improves to 6-3 on the season, while Moelter takes the loss for the Mustangs and falls to 4-3. For the Shorewomen in the nightcap, Carbutt went 3-for-5. Ripple was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two RBI and a sacrifice fly. Devaud was 2-for-4, but reached base all four times, while Rohde was 2-for-5. Also going 2-for-5 was sophomore Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame). In game one, the Mustangs scored one in the third when Jessica Bandwolek scores on a single by Bilski to take an early 1-0 lead. Washington answered with three in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Tryhubenko scores on an RBI hit by freshman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) to even the game at 1-1. Rohde singles in Snover to put WC up 2-1 and Rohde is plated by an RBI double by Ripple. Stevenson scored four in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, which would be the final. Rouse drives in Michelle January to cut it to 3-2. Bedgar drives in Rouse to even the score at 3-3. Bandzolek then launches a game-winning two-run home run to put the hosts up 5-3. Julianne Roper picks up the win in the opener to improve to 5-4 for Stevenson, while Adams takes the loss for Washington and drops to 5-3. The Shorewomen are back in action Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. home double-header against Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams. |
