25, 2009 SALISBURY, MD -- Host Salisbury University swept both ends of a non-conference softball double-header over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Field. The Sea Gulls took game one, 14-0, and posted a 7-1 shutout in game two. The Sea Gulls, who have won 30 in a row, improve to 34-4, while the Shorewomen conclude their 2009 season at 15-21-1. In the opener, Salisbury scored four runs in the bottom of the first to lead 4-0 and broke the game open with a nine-run second inning to lead 13-0. The hosts added one in the bottom of the third to provide the final margin. The game ended after 4 1/2 innings due to the eight-run rule. At the plate for the Sea Gulls in the opener, Stacey Malarkey was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and Lauren Brenneman was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Both players hit home runs in the first game. Six Salisbury players had two hits in the win as the hosts pounded out 16 hits. In the circle, Stacy Davis got the win and improves to 20-2. She allowed just three hits in her five innings of work. For Washington, senior Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss and concludes the season with a record of 10-10. She set the Washington College single-season record for innings pitched with 127, breaking the marking of Allison Weisbrod, who tossed 123.2 innings in 1999. She became the school's all-time leader in innings pitched in a season when she got Kristin Lord to ground out to freshman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) to end the first inning. In game two, the Sea Gulls got two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0 after three. The Shorewomen cut the hosts lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Snover plated freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) on a single up the middle. Salisbury would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open taking advantage of three Washington errors in the inning after there were two away in the inning. For Salisbury in game two, Kelsey Mills got the win in the circle and improves to 13-2 in tossing a complete game. She struck out three and scattered five hits. For the Shorewomen, freshman hurler Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) took the loss and finishes her 2009 season at 5-10. She allowed just three hits and only two of the seven runs she allowed were earned. Today were the final games in a Washington uniform for Adams. |
