2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Washington College softball team split a pair of games at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach today. The Shorewomen (3-4) defeated Penn State-Harrisburg, 7-3, in their first game of the day before falling to Division II Seton Hill, 7-1, in their second game. Against Penn State-Harrisburg, the Shorewomen scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) singled and scored on a double by freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park). Snover then scored on a single by freshman second baseman Margaret Rhode (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) and freshman designated player Erin Ficca (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) scored when senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) reached on an error to make it 3-0. Two batters later, freshman first baseman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) hit a grand slam to left center field to increase the lead to 7-0. The Nittany Lions scored their runs in the top of the third inning as Emily Pae, Kadee Brinser, and Paige Zeckman all scored on fielder's choices to make it 7-3. Freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) went 2-for-4 with a double for the Shorewomen, marking her fifth straight multiple-hit game. Adams pitched the first five and one-third innings to get the win, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and one walk. Ficca pitched the final inning and two-thirds, allowing no runs on one hit. Zeckman was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss for Penn State-Harrisburg (0-5). In the Shorewomen's second game of the day, Louanne Wiegand drove in Lisa Kaczynski, who reached on a double, with a single in the top of the third to give Seton Hill a 1-0 lead. Jessi DiViltorio singled in Liz Piekut in the top of the fourth inning to provide the Griffins' second run and Maggie Jones doubled and scored on a double by Jenna Vavra in the fifth to make it 3-0. Jones hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to push the margin to 7-0. Ficca scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to put the Shorewomen on the board. Jones finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Piekut went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored for the Griffins. Caitlyn Kamalich went the distance for Seton Hill to pick up the win, allowing one unearned run on five hits and four walks while striking out right batters. Carbutt extended her streak of multiple hit games to six in a row with a 2-for-4 performance against Seton Hill. The Shorewomen will play Regis at 9:30 a.m. and Pitt-Greensburg at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Myrtle Beach. |
