2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Washington College softball team slipped to 2-3 on the season with a pair of losses today at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC. In their first game of the day, the Shorewomen fell to Wilmington (OH) College, 4-1. In their second game, the Shorewomen lost to SUNYIT, 2-1, in eight innings. In the Shorewomen's first game, Wilmington (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Kylie Ford led off the frame with a double to left field and scored on a single down the left-field line by Liz Christensen. The Shorewomen knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) which drove in freshman left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney). The Quakers plated three runs in the bottom of third to pull ahead, 4-1, as Cory Sheets hit a two-run single and scored on a single by Amanda Smith. Cory Sheets finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Quakers. Smith picked up the win in the circle, allowing one run on just three hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. Freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double in the loss for Washington. Senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss for the Shorewomen, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five batters. In the Shorewomen's game with SUNYIT, the score remained 0-0 until the top of the sixth inning. Carbutt singled to lead off the inning and Snover followed with a single of her own. Freshman right fielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) then reached on an error to load the bases. Two batters later, Snover scored on a fielder's choice by freshman pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross). In the bottom of the seventh, Nicolette Kennedy led off with a double for the Wildcats' second hit of the game and scored on an during a two-error play two batters later to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Jane Burroughs drove in Tracy Lee with an RBI single to win the game for SUNYIT (2-2). Kennedy and Carbutt were the only players in the game to record multiple hits as they each had two for their respective teams. Juleah Vedder picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing one unearned run on six hits and no walks while striking out four batters in eight innings. Kimme took the hard-luck loss for the Shorewomen after allowing two unearned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out seven batters in seven and one-third innings of work. The Shorewomen will play Penn State-Harrisburg at 9:30 a.m. and Seton Hill at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Myrtle Beach. |
