Eagles Hold Off Shorewomen, 3-1
Carbutt Goes 3-for-4 in Loss

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Bridgewater College scored the first two runs of the game and held off rallies by Washington College in the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 3-1 softball victory this morning in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Eagles improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 2-1 with the loss.

Bridgewater got on the board in the bottom of the third when Kristen Combs led off the inning with a double and later scored on a single to right-center by Lauren Childress. The Eagles scored their second run in the bottom of the fourth when Hillary Rees led off the inning with a double and later scored while Emily Morris was thrown out at first base after a dropped third strike.

Freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) led off the top of the sixth inning for the Shorewomen with a single and later advanced to second a wild pitch. She scored when freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) hit a one-out single and advanced to second on an error. Snover advanced to third on a single by senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), but Bridgewater reliever Ashley Gills struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Bridgewater tacked on its third run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rees led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error. Washington freshman designated player Kristine Cunningham (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) was hit by a Gills pitch with one out in the top of the seventh and was pinch-run for by freshman Kelly Moncure (West Point, VA/West Point). Freshman left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) then singled to put runners on first and second. Carbutt followed with a double, but Moncure was thrown out trying to score on the play and Gills struck out the next batter to end the game.

Rees finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Bridgewater, while Morris and Caity Butler each went 2-for-4. Summer Ramsey picked up the win in the circle, allowing no runs on three hits and no walks while striking out four batters in five innings. Gills picked up the save, allowing five hits and one run, but striking out four batters in two innings of work.

Carbutt went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Shorewomen. Adams was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings.

The Shorewomen, who are scrimmaging Del Tech-Georgetown later today, will play Wilmington (OH) at 9:30 a.m. and SUNYIT at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Myrtle Beach.
