2009 MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Washington College softball team got first-year coach Lacey Lister's head coaching career off on the right track with a pair of wins today at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC, to open the 2009 season. The Shorewomen, who have 13 freshmen on a 16-woman roster, blanked Regis, 5-0, in the first game and out-slugged Penn State-Berks, 10-4, in the second. The Shorewomen took a 3-0 lead against Regis (0-1) in the bottom of the first inning when freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) drove in freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) with an RBI single, sophomore shortstop Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) scored on a ground out by senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Snover scored on a ground out by freshman right fielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame). Washington tacked on two more runs when Devaud hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, driving in herself and Snover. Snover finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Devaud drove in three runs and scored one. Ashley Paolini went 3-for-3 at the plate for Regis. Adams pitched the first five innings to get the win, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks while striking out four batters. Freshman Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) pitched the final two innings to get the save, allowing no runs on three hits and no walks while striking out three. Washington and Penn State-Berks (0-2) were tied at 4-4 before the Shorewomen plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carbutt accounted for the first three runs, homering down the left field line to also drive in freshman catcher Shannon Stocklin (Elkins Park, PA/Mount St. Joseph) and freshman outfielder Kristine Cunningham (Levittown, NY/Island Trees). Devaud doubled in Van Gosen, freshman second baseman Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education), and Devaud scored on an Adams ground out to complete the inning's scoring. Carbutt finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, three runs scored, the home run, and a double. Snover went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Rhode was 2-for-4 with the double, a pair of RBI, and a stolen base. Marlee Manwiller led Penn State-Berks with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate and a pair of RBI. Adams also got the win against Penn State-Berks, throwing a perfect sixth inning in relief and striking out two batters. The Shorewomen will play Bridgewater at 9:30 a.m. and scrimmage Delaware Tech at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Myrtle Beach. |
