Shorewomen Split With Green Terror
Carbutt and Adams Tie School Marks

WESTMINSTER, MD -- Visiting Washington College and host McDaniel College split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Westminster, MD. The Green Terror took game one, 4-2, while the Shorewomen captured game two, 6-2. Washington is now 13-19-1 overall and conclude the Centennial portion of its schedule at 4-11-1, while McDaniel is now 12-17 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

In game one, the Green Terror jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Erinne Warrenfeltz plated Brittany Jarboe on a single up the middle and Lauren Wildsain scored on single through the right side by Lauren Toomey. Washington cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth when freshman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) slammed a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to centerfield with two away. McDaniel got the run back in the bottom half of the frame when Kelli Workmeister scored on a Shorewoman error.

McDaniel expanded its lead to 4-1 when Warrenfeltz hit a longball to center to lead off the fifth. The Shorewomen loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with no outs and got a sacrifice fly off the bat off freshman Shannon Stocklin (Elkins Park, PA/Mount St. Jospeh) that plated fellow classmate Margaret Rohde (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) to cut the home team's lead to 4-2, but would draw no closer and McDaniel would hold on for the game one victory.

McDaniel's Christina Morley got the win and improves to 6-7 on the season as she struck out four in tossing a complete game. At the plate, Jarboe, Toomey and Warrenfeltz each had two hits in the win. For Washington, senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss and falls to 9-9 on the season, hurling her 11th complete game of 2009. She tied the school mark for most career appearances with 73 and appearances in a season with 24. At the plate, freshman Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was 3-for-4 and Ripple went 2-for-3 with a home run.

Washington jumped out fast in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first. After the first two batters were retired, the Shorewomen put two on the board to grab a 2-0 lead. Freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) scored on a single to left field off the bat of freshman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) to make it 1-0 and Ripple made it 2-0 when she crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Washington used some more two-out magic in the top of the second to score four times. Ripple knocked in sophomore Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) on a single to left to make it 3-0. The next batter, Snover extended the lead to 5-0 on a single to center that plated two and she would come around to score on a two-bagger by Rohde to put the visitors up 6-0 to cap the four-run inning.

The Green Terror responded with two runs in the bottom half of the second when Samantha Staub cranked a two-run homer with one away to trim the WC lead to 6-2. That would close the scoring though as Washington freshman pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) and McDaniel reliever Morley both tossed five innings of scoreless ball from the third to seventh innings. In the sixth inning, Carbutt tied the WC single-season mark for hits with 48 on a single to left-center.

For Washington in game two, Devaud, Ripple and Snover all totaled two hits with Devaud and Ripple scoring two runs and Snover driving in three runners. Kimme got the win in the circle, tossing her eighth complete game of the year to improve to 4-9. McDaniel's Warrenfeltz got the loss and falls to 5-7 on the season, lasting just 1 2/3 innings and giving up all six runs, but only two of them earned. Morley tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and was 2-for-2 from the plate.

The Shorewomen return to action tomorow with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference twinbill versus Delmarva rival Wesley on Senior Day.
