2009 IMMACULATA, PA -- The Washington College softball team swept a pair of games from host Immaculata University this afternoon. The Shorewomen (7-4) pulled out a 3-2 win in eight innings in game one and blistered the Mighty Macs (0-8) for 18 runs in an 18-3 five-inning victory in game two. In game one, Washington freshman first baseman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) homered in the top of the sixth inning to give the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead. The Mighty Macs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Megan Gallagher scored on an error and Carol Mastrosante hit an RBI double to give Immaculata a 2-1 lead. An RBI single by WC freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) in the top of the seventh knotted the score at 2-2. WC freshman second baseman Margaret Rhode (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) led off the eighth inning with a double and later scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on an error. Senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) tossed a scoreless bottom of the frame to finish the win for Washington. Carbutt finished the game 2-for-4 for the Shorewomen, while Mastrosante and Julia Lamplugh each had two hits for Immaculata. Adams pitched all eight innings for Washington, allowing one earned run on six hits and no walks. The Shorewomen recorded 22 hits in the second game to plate their most runs in a single game since a 20-4 win over Marywood on March 13th, 2003. Washington scored five runs in the first, four in the second, two in the third, and seventh in the fourth. Freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) went 3-for-5 with three RBI, three runs scored, a double, and her first collegiate home run, while Carbutt finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Carbutt extended her hitting streak to 10 games and has now recorded at least two hits in nine of the Shorewomen's 11 games this season. Rohde, sophomore designated player Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), freshman right fielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), sophomore shortstop Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood), and freshman catcher Shannon Stocklin (Elkins Park, PA/Mount St. Joseph) each had two hits. Rohde had a run scored and an RBI; Nicely tallied a double, an RBI, and two runs scored; Devaud had a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored; and Van Gosen drove in three runs and scored another. Freshman pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the win, throwing the first three innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Freshman Erin Ficca (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. double-header at Stevenson. |
