Shorewomen Level With Red Devils
Carbutt 6-For-9 In Twinbill; Adams 4-for-4 In Game 1

CARLISLE, PA -- Visiting Washington College got a 6-for-9 performance from freshman Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to gain a split in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader against host Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson Park. The Shorewomen won game two by a 7-3 score, while the Red Devils captured a 3-2 win in nine innings in the opener. Dickinson is now 15-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while Washington, who has won three of its last four, is now 11-17-1 and 3-10-1 respectively.

In game two, Washington scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Carbutt scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run and freshman Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) scored on a passed ball to put the Shorewomen up 2-0. Dickinson responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second to tie the contest at 2-2 on back-to-back RBI singles by Kryie Budnik and Erin King.

The Shorewomen took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning, all coming after the first two hitters were retired. Freshman Margaret Rohde (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) hit her first career home run to make it 3-2. Freshman Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) crossed home plate on an error to put WC up 4-2 and Carbutt plated sophomore Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) on an RBI single to increase the lead to 5-2.

Jen Welsh trimmed the Shorewomen lead to 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning when she scored on a fielder's choice. In the top of the fifth, WC scored two more runs to extend its lead to 7-3 and provide the final margin in game two on a two-out two-run single by Ripple.

Washington, which scored six of its seven runs with two outs, was led by Carbutt, as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the win. Rohde was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Ripple had two RBI. In the circle, senior hurler Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) got the win and improves to 8-8. She pitched the first five innings of the nightcap before giving way to freshman Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross), who tossed two scoreless innings of relief.

For Dickinson, King and Welsh each had two hits, with King driving in two runs and Welsh scoring two runs. Pitcher Alex Brody took the loss in the circle and falls to 4-8.

In game one, the Shorewomen jumped on the board first when Adams, who doubled herself, scored on a two-bagger off the bat of Ripple in the top of the second to grab a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Red Devils evened the score when Welsh scored on a WC error.

Dickinson scored a run in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead when Madison Garrish scored on a single by Sarha Pangia. Washington would level the tilt at 2-2 in the top of the fifth sophomore Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) knocked in Carbutt from second base on a double.

The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth when the Red Devils would score the winning run of the opener. With one out, Pangia singled and would then steal second base. The next batter, Jess Haklar reached on an error by the Shorewomen and Pangia would come around from second base to score the winning run.

Dickinson's Liz Barry got the win in game one, tossing a complete game victory to improve to 7-3 on the year. Pangia was 3-for-5 in the opener, Emma Murtaugh was 2-for-3, while Alesha Sisco totaled two hits in five at-bats.

For Washington, Adams was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and it was her first career four-hit game. Carbutt was 3-for-5 with a run scored in the first game. In the circle, Kimme took the loss in relief and falls to 3-8. She tossed 3 1/3 innings after Adams went the first five innings.

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. home non-conference twinbill versus Catholic.
