2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College split a non-conference softball double-header with visiting Catholic University this afternoon in Chestertown, MD. The Shorewomen (12-18-1) won the first game, 6-5, while the Cardinals (14-14) took game two, 6-2. In the first game, Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Megan Rizzi hit an RBI double and later scored on an error. The Shorewomen got a run back in the bottom of the frame as freshman center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) led off with a double and later scored. The Shorewomen moved ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third with back-to-back two-out home runs by freshman right fielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and freshman third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park). The Shorewomen tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI ground out by sophomore designated player Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), and RBI single by Carbutt, and a double steal that saw freshman left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) steal home. The Cardinals mounted a rally in the seventh on an RBI single by Rizzi and a two-run home run by Stacie Goddard, but senior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) stopped the comeback attempt with a strikeout with a runner on second to end the game. Carbutt went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Tryhubenko was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Adams got the win, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Rizzi went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the opener for Catholic. Kelly Lukacs went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Goddard was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. The Cardinals scored first in the second game when Goddard hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Catholic made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Mary Kate Marquis, an RBI triple by Tracey Scanlon, and an RBI single by Rizzi. The Shorewomen got two runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Carbutt and a sacrifice fly by Devaud. Catholic added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Sophie Gage to account for the final margin. Goddard pitched the second game for Catholic and got the win, striking out nine batters while allowing four hits and two walks. Rizzi went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Catholic, while Katie Ann Trotta was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Marquis was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman catcher Shannon Stocklin (Elkins Park, PA/Mount St. Joseph) was the only Shorewoman with multiple hits in the second game, going 2-for-3 at the plate. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at McDaniel. |
