Garnet Broom Shorewomen In DH
Adams Tosses Complete Game In Opener

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College swept visiting Washington College in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at Clothier Field. The Garnet won the opener, 1-0, in eight innings and captured game two, 7-2. Swarthmore is now 19-9 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while the Shorewomen fall to 8-16 and 3-7 respectively.

With the score 0-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Garnet pushed the lone run across with the help of two Washington errors. Lauren Walker reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristin Caspar. On the play, the Shorewomen tried to get Walker off of second base, but the throw got away and Walker was able to score the walk-off run.

Kathryn Riley picked up the victory for Swarthmore in the opener, allowing just five hits in the complete game shutout to improve to 14-4. For Washington, junior Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss and falls to 5-6. She went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out three.

Shorewomen junior Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) was the lone player to record two hits in the game.

In game two, Swarthmore scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. With the Garnet up 1-0, Katherine Gold launched a two-run home run to put the hosts up by three.

Washington would score a run each in the top of the second and third innings to trim the Swarthmore lead to 3-2. In the second, senior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) drove in senior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian (DE) on a double in the second to cut it to 3-1. In the top of the third, the Shorewomen cut the lead to 3-2 on a sacrifice bunt by Russell that scored senior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara).

The Garnet made it 4-2 in the bottom of the third when Maggie Vizcarra drove in Riley on a sacrifice fly.

Swarthmore scored three in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2 and provide the final margin. Riley made it 5-2 on an RBI double and Gold's two-run two-base hit to make it 7-2.

Riley picked up the win in relief for the Garnet to go to 15-4 on the season, pitching the final 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing just four hits. Senior Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur) took the loss for the Shorewomen and falls to 2-6 on the season.

For Swarthmore, Gold went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the victory and Riley went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. For Washington, Russell and Campbell each had two hits and an RBI in the nightcap.

Washington returns to action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader against visiting Dickinson.
