2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Haverford swept a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader from host Washington College on Sunday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Fords rallied from a 7-4 deficit with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to win game one, 11-7, and grabbed game two, 10-2. Haverford is now 19-11 overall and 11-3 in conference play, while Washington is now 8-20 and 3-11 respectively. Haverford built up a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, scoring three of the runs with two outs. The Shorewomen would explode for six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-4 lead. Junior Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) doubled to left field to plate senior Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) and junior Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase). Washington evened the score at 4-4 on a RBI single by senior Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) that plated Luterzo. Senior Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) came up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a single to centerfield that was misplayed by the Haverford centerfielder and allowed three runs to score and give the Shorewomen a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the seventh. In the top of the seventh, the first eight Fords reached as Haverford scored seven runs to pull off the win. Candice Smith's RBI single cut the Washington lead to 7-5. Following another Haverford hit, Adams was replaced in the circle by senior Michelle Laque (Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur). The first batter Laque faced, Lindsey Sullivan tied the game at 7-7 on a double to the right field gap that drove in two. The next batter, Cassandra Searls knocked in Sullivan on a double to left center and gave the guests an 8-7 lead. Searls scored on a two-base hit off the bat of Beth Davis to make it 9-7. Dana Irshay capped off the rally with a two-run double to make it 11-7 and provide the final margin in game one. Irshay and Sullivan each had three hits with Sullivan scoring three runs, for Haverford in game one. Allison Crawford, Davis, Irshay and Sullivan each drove in two runs in the opener, with Irshay and Searls both scoring two runs. Maggie Cronin picked the victory, tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and improves to 2-1. For Washington, Travers went 4-for-4 with one RBI, while Luterzo was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and freshmen, Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and Jes Van Gosen (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) all had two hits. In the circle, Laque took the loss and falls to 2-8. In game two, Washington broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third on a single by Campbell that scored senior Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian (DE) to put the hosts up 2-1. Haverford would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth when Crawford hit a two-run home run to over the left field wall to put the Fords up 3-2. The Fords got three two-out RBI hits in the top of fifth from Smith, Frank and Sullivan to put Haverford up 6-2. The visitors added four more runs in the top of the seventh on two RBI hits from Frank and Crawford. For the Fords in game two, Frank was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Crawford was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Becky Garibotto chalked up the victory in the circle, scattering eight hits in a complete game win. She is now 8-4 for the season. Pastorino and Proctor each tallied two hits for the Shorewomen in the nightcap. In the circle, senior Tricia Carroll (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) took the loss and falls to 1-1. The Shorewomen return to action on Sunday, April 27 with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference doubleheader versus visiting Muhlenberg. |
