Diplomats Sweep WC in Twin Bill
Pastorino Totals Four Hits in Pair of Losses

LANCASTER, PA -- Host Franklin & Marshall swept a Centennial Conference softball double-header from visiting Washington College Sunday afternoon, winning game one, 3-1, and taking game two, 7-6. The Diplomats improved to 7-15 overall and 4-6 with the wins, while the Shorewomen fell to 8-14 and 3-5.

A pair of Washington errors helped F&M get a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Washington tied the score in the top of the fourth inning when senior outfielder Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) drove in junior first baseman Meghan Luterzo (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/St. Mary's) with a sacrifice fly.

F&M pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning when a pair of runs came across on on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Incorvaia and an error on the same play.

Bonnie Crouthamel got the win for F&M, allowing one run on eight hits and three walks. Junior pitcher Emily Adams (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took the loss in game one, despite allowing no earned runs on four hits and no walks. Washington senior second baseman Irene Pastorino (Swarthmore, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was the only player with two hits in the opener, going 2-for-4.

F&M took a 1-0 lead in game two when Robyn Jones reached on an error and scored on a double by Incorvaia. The Diplomats added three more runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Liz Iannaconi and a two-run single by Kathleen Clinchy. The Shorewomen cut the lead to 4-1 when senior outfielder Meg Travers (Huntingtown, MD/Calvert) hit an RBI single in the top of third that drove in freshman Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), who doubled earlier in the inning.

Nicely also scored Washington's second run of the game on an RBI single by Travers in the top of the fifth. Travers came across the plate later in the inning on an RBI single by senior third baseman Amanda Campbell (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) to trim the Diplomat lead to 4-3. Senior shortstop Megan Russell (Federalsburg, MD/Seaford Christian, DE) scored the tying run in the fifth when Adams walked with the bases loaded. The Diplomats regained the lead with a two-run triple by Kristina Fietkiewicz and an RBI double by Caitlin Elfring in the bottom of the fifth that put F&M up, 7-4. Washington mounted a rally in the top of the seventh as senior catcher Kim Proctor (Ferndale, MD/Institue of Notre Dame) doubled in Travers and Adams singled in Russell to cut the margin to 7-6. The Diplomats got out of the jam, though, as Crouthamel, who came on in relief, retired the final two batters of the game.

Clinchy, Iannaconi, and Incorvaia each had two hits in the second game for F&M, while Nicely, Pastorino, Travers, and Russell each had two hits for the Shorewomen. Crouthamel got the win for the Diplomats, pitching the final three innings in relief and allowing two runs, one of them earned, on four hits and a walk.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at Swarthmore.
