May 12, 2009 LIVE RESULTS CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 14th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team's first varsity eight has been selected as one of the two at-large boats to compete at the NCAA Division III Championship May 29th and 30th to be held at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, NJ. The selection marks the second consecutive and second overall berth in an NCAA Championship for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen's first varsity eight is currently the top-ranked boat in the Mid-Atlantic region and has posted a 19-6 record this spring, including a 16-5 record against Division III varsity programs and a perfect 15-0 mark against other Mid-Atlantic region boats. The Shorewomen's first varsity eight also won the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Varsity Eight Championship. Five seats of the Shorewomen's first varsity eight have been occupied by the same rowers all spring - junior All-MARC selection Ericka Malow (Brunswick, OH/Brunswick) at stroke, senior All-MARC selection Jenna Lapointe (Newark, DE/Newark) in the seven seat, sophomore Sarah Holland (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep) in the six seat, junior Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) in the five seat, and junior Emily Hofler (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) in the four seat. Freshman Kendall Mulligan (Southbury, CT/Westover School) has been in the three seat for five of the Shorewomen's six regattas; sophomore Catherine Black (Kimberton, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) rowed there at the MARC Championships. Senior Nicole Rousseau (Burlington, CT/Miss Porter's School) has been in the two seat for the past four regattas; sophomore Christine Lynch (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) rowed there in the Caspersen Cup and in a home regatta against Franklin & Marshall. Freshman Ellen Liebenow (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) has been the Shorewomen's bow the past three regattas after junior Caroline Perry (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep), a 2008 first-team All-American whose season has been hampered by injury, rowed there in the first three regattas this spring. Junior Krista Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) has served as the coxswain of the Shorewomen's first varsity eight for all but one race this spring. Sophomore Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was the Shorewomen's coxswain in the first varsity eight at the Caspersen Cup, the first race of the spring. The NCAA began sponsoring a championship for women's rowing in 1997, but did not hold separate Division I, II, and III championships until 2002. The Shorewomen have had the top-ranked team and/or boat in the Mid-Atlantic Region every year since 2002. Their at-large boat berth in last year's championship marked their first-ever appearance in the national championship regatta. The Shorewomen's first varsity eight finished 11th of 16 boats at last year's NCAA Division III Championship. Seven teams comprised of schools' first and second varsity eights are selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship. The two at-large boats also selected can compete for places, but not points in the overall team standings. The seven teams selected for this year's championship were Bates, Ithaca, Puget Sound, St. Lawrence, Smith, Trinity (CT), and Williams. Willamette joined Washington as the other at-large boat. Three heats of six, five, and five boats, respectively, will be held on Friday, May 29th. The winner of each heat advances directly to the grand final, while the second and third-place boats in each heat advance to the grand qualifier and the remaining boats go to the petite qualifier. Both the petite qualifier and grand qualifier will also be held on May 29th. The top three boats from the grand qualifier advance to the grand final, the bottom three go to the petite final. The top three boats in the petite qualifier go on to the petite final, while the remaining four boats go on to the third-level final. The third-level, petite, and grand finals will be held on Saturday, May 30th. The third-level final will determine boat places 13th-16th. The petite final, consisting of the top three boats from the petite qualifier and the bottom three boats from the grand qualifier, will determine boat places 7th-12th. The grand final, consisting of the winners of the three heats and the top three finishers from the grand qualifier, will determine boat places 1st-6th. Useful
