CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 12th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team's varsity eight has been selected as one of the two at-large boats to compete at the NCAA Division III Championship May 30th and 31st to be held at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, CA. The selection marks the first-ever berth in an NCAA Championship for the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen's varsity eight is currently the top-ranked boat in the Mid-Atlantic region and has posted a 29-7 record this spring, including a 22-2 record against Division III varsity programs, under the direction of 2008 Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year Mike Davenport. The Shorewomen's only Division III losses came against fourth-ranked Ithaca and 13th-ranked Smith in a heat at last weekend's ECAC National Invitational Championships. The varsity eight's Division III wins include wins over nationally-ranked Wellesley and Mount Holyoke and three victories over Mary Washington's varsity eight, the second-ranked eight in the Mid-Atlantic.

Sophomore Krista Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) serves as coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity eight. Sophomore Caroline Perry (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep), sophomore Ericka Malow (Brunswick, OH/Brunswick), junior Jenna Lapointe (Newark, DE/Newark), sophomore Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville), junior Carol Funck (Etters, PA/Red Land), freshman Sarah Holland (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep), senior Courtney Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), and sophomore Emily Hofler (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) are the boat's rowers. Perry and Malow earned All-Region honors this spring. Senior Laura Ratz (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) and freshman coxswain Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) will serve as the team's alternates.

The NCAA began sponsoring a championship for women's rowing in 1997, but did not hold separate Division I, II, and III championships until 2002. The Shorewomen have had the top-ranked team and/or boat in the Mid-Atlantic Region every year since 2002.

Seven teams comprised of schools' first and second varsity eights are selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship. The two at-large boats also selected can compete for places, but not points in the overall team standings. The seven teams selected for this year's championship were Williams, Trinity (CT), Ithaca, Puget Sound, Bates, St. Lawrence, and William Smith. Coast Guard joined Washington as the other at-large boat.

Three heats of six, five, and five boats, respectively, will be held on Friday, May 30th. The winner of each heat advances directly to the grand final, while the second and third-place boats in each heat advance to the grand qualifier and the remaining boats go to the petite qualifier. Both the petite qualifier and grand qualifier will also be held on May 30th. The top three boats from the grand qualifier advance to the grand final, the bottom three go to the petite final. The top three boats in the petite qualifier go on to the petite final, while the remaining four boats go on to the third-level final.

The third-level, petite, and grand finals will be held on Saturday, May 31st. The third-level final will determine boat places 13th-16th. The petite final, consisting of the top three boats from the petite qualifier and the bottom three boats from the grand qualifier, will determine boat places 7th-12th. The grand final, consisting of the winners of the three heats and the top three finishers from the grand qualifier, will determine boat places 1st-6th.
