Washington College Rowing Program

In 1967, a small group of enthusiastic students put together the first rowing team at Washington College. Since then, the program has grown to be one of the largest varsity sports for both men and women.

As the program's size has grown, so too has its success. Washington College has become one of the NCAA Division III powerhouses in the Central Region. Washington is located in one of the most competitive rowing regions in the country, and competes annually against teams such as Marietta, John Hopkins, U of Delaware, George Mason and FIT.

Producing Dad Vail and IRA medalists and NCAA regionally-ranked crews has become standard for the team. In 1994, Washington had three boats medal at the Dad Vails and two boats medal at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (I.R.A.) championships. Both the men's and women's teams have continued their success in recent years.

However, the mission of the program and the philosophy of the coaching staff extends well beyond competitive success. Developing the student-athlete into a whole person and giving him/her the opportunity to learn to set and achieve goals is the basic premise of the coaching philosophy. While we strive to make the fastest boats possible, our hope is that lessons learned on the water and in the boathouse will carry into the student-athlete's life and personal success. It is our hope that involvement in rowing enhances an athletes collegiate experience.

As evidence of this philosophy, past rowers have competed in the Olympics and have become Fulbright Scholars. Numerous rowers have gone on to medical, veterinarian and law school.
