March 25,
2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore midfielder Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) scored three goals and assisted on three others as host Washington College defeated visiting Rowan University, 12-10, in non-conference women's lacrosse action tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The win was the Shorewomen's (5-2) first-ever over the Profs (2-4) in seven all-time meetings. Rowan jumped out to a quick three goal lead just 2:19 into the game. Washington answered with a four-goal run, taking a 4-3 advantage on a goal by senior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) off an assist from junior midfielder Allie Hanzsche (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) with 22:55 remaining in the first half. Rowan tied the score on a goal by Carly Welsh with 21:36 to go in the half, but the Shorewomen took a 6-4 lead on back-to-back goals by freshman attacker Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) and Jakub with 13:37 and 11:52 left, respectively. Jakub's goal was assisted by Hanzsche. The Profs responded with a goal by Kelly Angstadt with 8:52 left and a goal by Lauren Crennan off an assist by Angstadt 45 seconds later to tie the score at 6-6. Washington then reclaimed the lead on a free-position goal by Ohrem with 6:55 left, but the Profs would tie the score again before halftime on a Crennan tally with 3:04 remaining to make it 7-7 at the break. The Shorewomen scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 9-7 lead as Jakub scored off an Ohrem feed with 28:41 remaining and Ohrem fired in an unassisted goal with 27:51 to play. Rowan scored the next two goals to tie the score at 9-9 as Crennan scored with 22:22 remaining and Angstadt scored on a free-position with 20:24 left. Ohrem then gave Washington the lead for good with an unassisted goal with 18:39 left and found sophomore attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) for a goal with 12:31 on the clock to make it 11-9. Rowan cut the lead back to one with 7:28 to play on a goal by Trish Harrington off an assist from Crennan, but that was as close as the Profs would get as Washington senior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) fired in the final goal of the game with 6:31 remaining to provide the 12-10 final margin. Ohrem was one of three Shorewomen to finish with at least three goals. Jakub had a game-high four, while Lambert netted three. Cannon had a goal and an assist, while Bartee scored one goal and Hanzsche notched two assists. Crennan led the Profs with three goals and an assist, while Welsh and Angstadt added two goals and one assist each. Harrington, Tori Hart, and Alli Dickey each scored once for Rowan. WC sophomore goalie Amber Madore (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) made 13 saves in the victory for the Shorewomen. Madore was impressive in the second half, making 10 saves while allowing just three goals, helping offset a 20-6 advantage in shots for the Profs during the final 30 minutes. Rowan held a 30-19 advantage in shots in the game, while Washington controlled 14 of the game's 24 draws. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at sixth-ranked Gettysburg. |
