1, 2009 HAVERFORD, PA -- Host Haverford College got four goals and one assist from Liz Koelmel as the Fords downed visiting Washington College, 13-10, this afternoon in Haverford, PA in a Centennial Conference women's lacrosse contest. The Fords improve to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen fall to 5-4 and 0-3 respectively. Washington senior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College (DC) opened the scoring 75 seconds into the game when she finished off a feed from sophomore attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) to put the Shorewomen up 1-0. Haverford responded with the next three goals to grab at 3-1 lead with 23:11 remaining in the opening half. The two teams would trade the next nine goals in the contest and the hosts led 7-6 with 1:45 left following a Jakub goal from Cannon. Washington ended the trade-off of goals when Jakub evened the game at 7-7 with 15 seconds in the first half with Cannon chalking up the helper. However, Haverford won the ensuing draw control and with three ticks left in the half, Nora Proops netted an unassisted goal to put the Fords up 8-7 at intermission. Haverford scored the first three goals of the second to take a 11-7 lead with 20:35 to go in the game. The four-goal run, which spanned both halves, was capped by MaryAlice Postel's third goal of the game with Koelmel registering the assist. Washington scored three of the next four goals to trim the deficit to 12-10 with 4:57 left in the game on an unassisted goal by freshman attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School). The Shorewomen could not draw any closer though and with 1:09 left in the game, Proops made it 13-10 and provided the final goal of the contest. For the hosts in addition to Koelmel, Postel tallied five points on three goals and two assists and Proops pumped in three goals. In goal, Siobhan Neitzel made eight saves in the victory. Jakub led Washington with three goals and Cannon had a game-best three assists. All of Jakub's goals were off of passes from Cannon. Freshman attacker Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) and Parrish added two goals each for the Shorewomen. Sophomore goalie Amber Madore (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) turned away seven shots. The Shorewomen outshot the Fords 32-22, but were 0-for-6 in free position shots, while the Fords were a cashed in on both of their free position shots. Haverford were 11-for-13 in clears, while Washington was 11-for-18. The Fords held a slight edge in draw controls, 13-12, and controlled the ground balls by a 15-8 margin. Washington had 19 turnovers, while Haverford had 16. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Ursinus. |
