Seahawks Peck Shorewomen, 10-8
Lambert Tallies Three Goals, Assist in Opening Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting St. Mary's College held host Washington College scoreless over the final 11:12 of the game en route to a 10-8 women's lacrosse victory tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Seahawks (2-1) got four goals from Lauren Carrier in the win, while junior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) scored three goals and assisted on another for the Shorewomen, who were playing their season opener.

St. Mary's scored the first two goals of the game, but the Shorewomen answered with the next three goals to pull in front, 3-2, on a free-position goal by freshman attacker Liz Cumberpatch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) with 11:49 on the clock. Neither team would score again until the Seahawks fired off four straight goals in the final 2:02 of the half to take a 6-3 lead at halftime. Carrier started the run with a goal with 2:02 left and finished it off with an unassisted goal off a draw control with 13 seconds left.

The Shorewomen turned the tables on the Seahawks in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring three times in the first 4:40 to knot the score at 6-6. Freshman attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) provided the equalizer when she scored off a feed from senior midfielder Alli Luchey (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) with 25:20 remaining.

St. Mary's took a 7-6 lead on a free-position goal by Emily Norris with 16:38 left and went up 8-6 10 seconds later when Norris scored off a feed from Elizabeth Northfield, who had controlled the draw. Washington closed the gap to 8-7 on a goal by junior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) off an assist from senior midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) with 13:00 remaining and evened the score at 8-8 when Lambert drove to the net for an unassisted goal with 11:12 left.

The Seahawks regained the lead with 9:26 remaining when Allie Zerhusen found Aileen McCausland for a goal. Washington won the ensuing draw and the ball remained on the Shorewomen's offensive end of the field for the next 5:34 as St. Mary's failed on three clear attempts in a row. Seahawk goalie Ella Schoming made four saves during that stretch. St. Mary's finally got the ball across midfield at the 3:50 mark and ran time off the clock until Carrier added an insurance goal with 1:06 remaining. Caitlin Nichols won the ensuing draw for St. Mary's and the Seahawks ran out the clock.

Carrier's four goals led all scorers. Norris added three goals for St. Mary's, while Northfield and McCausland each had one goal and one assist and Zerhusen finished with two assists. Kelsey Branch and Arianna Larrimore added one assist each.

Gouck finished with two goals and one assist to join Lambert as the Shorewomen's multiple-goal scorers. Cumberpatch, Canon, and Jakub each scored one goal, while Luchey had one assist.

St. Mary's controlled 14 of the game's 20 draws, including nine of the 10 draws in the first half. Carrier recorded half of those 14 draw controls for St. Mary's. Schoming made 14 saves for the Seahawks, while freshman goalie Amber Madore (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) made 12 in her collegiate debut for the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Frostburg State.
