2008 GLASSBORO, NJ -- Host Rowan University held off a second-half charge by visiting Washington College en route to a 12-10 women's lacrosse victory this evening in Glassboro, NJ. The Profs improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen, who finished the game on a 7-2 run, fell to 4-3 with the loss. Rowan scored the first four goals of the game and built a 9-3 halftime lead as Caitlin Meseroll scored four times in the first half. Rowan extended the lead to 10-3 by scoring first in the second half, but the Shorewomen scored four of the next five goals, capped off by a free-position goal by senior midfielder Lindsay Fox (Laurel, MD/Atholton) with 20:31 remaining to trim the lead to 11-7. Carly Welsh put the Profs back up by five goals with a goal with 15:32 remaining. Washington freshman attacker Liz Cumberpatch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored off an assist from junior attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) with 12:55 to go and senior midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) netted a goal with 10:26 remaining to trim the margin to 12-9. Prof goalie Alicia Mannino made several key saves on the next few Washington possessions and Rowan consistently ran time off the clock on their own offensive end as the score remained 12-9 until Gouck netted the final goal of the game with 38 seconds remaining. Rowan won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock to hold on for the victory. The game was a tale of two halves as the Profs outshot the Shorewomen, 19-6, in the first half, but Washington outshot Rowan, 18-4, in the second half. Mannino recorded eight of her 11 saves in the game during the second half. Meseroll led all scorers with five goals, while Stacie McKinley added three goals and one assist for the Profs. Welsh and Lauren Crennan each scored two goals, while Kelly Angstadt had one assist. Gouck led the Shorewomen with three goals and two assists, while Cumberpatch and Fox each scored two goals. Jakub tallied one goal and one assist for Washington, while junior midfielder Brittany Lambert (Riva, MD/South River) and freshman attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) each scored one goal. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III National Champion Franklin & Marshall. |
