March 2, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior midfielder Melanie Ruppert (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored three goals and assisted on another and freshman attacker Suzie Jakub (University Park, MD/St. John's College, DC) scored three goals of her own as host Washington College defeated visiting Marymount University, 10-6, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Kirby Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Saints slipped to 1-1 with the loss. The Shorewomen sprinted out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first half as Ruppert scored off an assist from senior attacker Kelly Gallagher (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) 23 seconds into the contest, Gallagher scored off an assist from senior midfielder Erin Bollinger (Perry Hall, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) 53 seconds into the game, and Ruppert scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jenna Gouck (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) 3:04 into the game. Marymount got on the board with 18:02 to play in the first half when Amber Slivester scored off a feed from SpringAnne Hatfield, but a pair of Jakub goals off assists from Ruppert and Bollinger, respectively, pushed the lead to 5-1. Marymount ended the half with three free-position goals to pull within one at the break as Hatfield scored with 7:48 to play, Therese Walsh scored with 5:32 remaining, and Hatfield scored again with 11 seconds to go in the period to trim the lead to 5-4. The Shorewomen took control of the game in the second half, scoring the first four goals. Freshman attacker Sally Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) opened the run with a goal with 23:24 left, Gallagher found Ruppert for a goal with 22:08 to go, Jakub scored off a Mancini assist with 19:26 remaining, and junior attacker Caitlin Beane (University Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) scored with 17:16 to play to make it 9-4. Walsh scored with 10:50 remaining and Hatfield scored with 8:10 to play to cut the lead to 9-6, but another goal by Beane with 4:06 on the clock finished the day's scoring and provided for the final 10-6 margin. Beane finished with two goals to join Ruppert and Jakub as multiple-goal scorers for the Shorewomen. Gallagher finished with one goal and two assists. Mancini tallied a goal and an assist, and Bollinger added two assists for Washington. Gouck and Bollinger recorded four draw controls each for Washington and Gouck also added five caused turnovers. Junior goalie Mollie Binotto (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) made four saves in the win for the Shorewomen. Hatfield led the way for the Saints, finishing with three goals, one assist, seven ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Walsh finished with two goals in the loss. Beth Dickey made 14 saves in goal for Marymount. The Shorewomen held a 31-14 advantage in shots in the game, including a 14-4 advantage in the second half. Washington also controlled 13 of the game's 18 draws. Today's game was the first women's lacrosse game played on the new Field Turf of Kibler Field at Kirby Stadium. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. home game against 11th-ranked St. Mary's. |
