Greyhounds Ground Shorewomen, 4-2
Kemp, Bircsak Score Goals in Loss

BETHLEHEM, PA -- Kayla Carlson scored three goals as host Moravian College defeated visiting Washington College, 4-2, in a non-conference field hockey game this afternoon in Bethlehem, PA. All six of the game's goals were scored in the second half as the Greyhounds improved to 5-8 and the Shorewomen fell to 6-5.

Neither team generated much offense in the first half as Moravian held a 4-1 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in penalty corners in the period.

Carlson put Moravian on the board with 31:12 remaining in the game when she knocked in a rebounding shot. The Shorewomen evened the score when senior attack Kristin Bircsak (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) following a penalty corner with 26:50 to play. The Greyhounds took the lead for good 2:58 later as Julie Bisci scored off a direct penalty corner with assists from Vita Ranella and Damara Varney. Moravian tacked on its third goal when Carlson scored on a shot down the goal line from the right side with 19:27 remaining and increased the lead to 4-1 when Carlson finished her three-goal day with a tap-in off an assist from Maureen Helfers with 17:59 to go. Senior attack Kelsey Kemp (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) scored the Shorewomen's second goal off a loose ball with 16:33 left.

Maura Acox made four saves in the win for Moravian, while senior goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made six saves for the Shorewomen before being relieved by junior Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) with 14:07 to play in the game. Davis made one save.

Moravian held a 14-7 advantage in shots in the game, with eight of the Greyhounds' shots coming from Carlson. The Shorewomen finished with a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins.
