8, 2008 COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Third-ranked Ursinus jumped out to a 8-1 halftime lead en route to a 14-1 win over visiting Washington College on Saturday at Eleanor Snell Frost Alumnae Field in the semifinal round of the Centennial Conference Field Hockey playoffs. The Bears, the top-seed in the conference tournament, improve to 16-2 on the season, while the fourth-seeded Shorewomen close out their season at 12-6. Ursinus got onto the board at the 9:23 mark when Michelle Wimmer finished off a Kait Sutherland pass off of a penalty corner. The Bears would net the next two goals in 48 seconds to secure a 3-0 lead. Sutherland scored on a penalty stroke 14:56 into the opening half and at 15:44, Jessica Zatwarnicki scored on a pass from Sutherland. Megan Yoder made it 4-0 at the 18:21 mark off of a rebound. Alyssa Thren would net the next two goals to make it 6-0. After Ursinus made it 7-0 with with 1:50 left in the opening half, Washington got onto the board when freshman attack Chelsea Collison (Bridgeville, DE/Woodbridge) scored with 1:11 left in front of the cage to make it 7-1. The Bears closed out the scoring in the opening half with three ticks left to make it 8-1 at intermission. The Bears got six goals in the second half to provide the final margin. Ursinus got two goals each from Thren, Yoder, Jennifer Bayzick and Jennie Moore in the win, while Sutherland tallied a game-high three assists. Ursinus outshot Washington, 40-6, in the win and held a 21-5 edge on penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made 11 saves in the loss for Washington, before giving away to sophomore Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) who turned away a career-best seven shots in the final 24:59 of the tilt. Senior defender Cora Jo Spare (North East, MD/North East) made two defensive saves for the Shorewomen. For the Bears, Erica Scott made four saves. The 12 victories for the Shorewomen was their most since winning 13 in 2001.
