7, 2008 WESTMINSTER, MD -- Sophomore attack Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley) scored two goals as visiting Washington College defeated host McDaniel College, 3-2, in the Centennial Conference field hockey opener for both schools this afternoon at Scott S. Bair Stadium in Westminster, MD. Rosato accounted for the first goal of the game with 16:10 remaining in the first half when scored during a scramble in front of the cage. The Shorewomen (2-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after holding the Green Terror (0-2) to two shots over the first 35 minutes. Michelle Fluty tied the score at 1-1 for the Green Terror, scoring off an assist from Jamie Smith with 31:05 to play in the game. Rosato gave the Shorewomen a 2-1 lead after sending in a goal with 27:48 left. Senior midfielder Amy Spadanuta (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) extended Washington's lead to 3-1 when she dribbled in and beat a defender to score with 11:02 remaining. McDaniel cut the lead to 3-2 with 5:34 to go in the game as Lindsay Riordon scored off a feed from Brooke Dixon, but the Green Terror could not get another shot off the rest of the way as the Shorewomen held on for the win. The Shorewomen held a 9-8 edge in shots in the game, while the Green Terror had a 10-9 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made a pair of saves for Washington in the win, while Erika Wawzyanick had three saves for McDaniel in the loss. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. game at Moravian.
