2008 BALTIMORE, MD -- Sixth-ranked host Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-1 Centennial Conference field hockey victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon on Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 9-2 and 4-1. The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for Washington. Hopkins opened the scoring 7:55 into the game when Emily Miller fired in a goal after receiving a pass from Andrea Vandersall near the end-line. Adair Landy made it 2-0 by firing in a high shot after bearing two defenders with 10:59 to play in the period. Washington got on the board with 30:23 left in the game as sophomore defender Sara Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) sent a corner to senior attack Candace Gaull (Laurel, DE/Laurel), who blasted the ball in from just inside the circle to make it 2-1. The Blue Jays answered when Chantal Serle scored off a penalty corner pass from Miller with 19:41 left. Hopkins held a 15-7 advantage in shots in the game and a 17-12 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made nine saves for the Shorewomen, while Sophia Tieu made four stops for the Blue Jays. Freshman defender Emily Broomell (East Petersburg, PA/Lancaster Christian) and senior defender Cora Jo Spare (North East, MD/North East) each made a defensive save for Washington, while Serle had a defensive save for Hopkins. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against fifth-ranked Ursinus.
