5, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College posted its first-ever Centennial Conference Field Hockey Tournament win tonight with a 3-1 victory over visiting Dickinson College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium in the tournament's first-round game. The Shorewomen, who improved to 12-5 on the year, advance to the semifinals with the win, while the Red Devils slip to 9-9 with the loss. Dickinson recorded the first shot of the game 2:39 into the first half when Katelynn Bias took a shot which was turned away by Washington senior defender Cora Jo Spare (North East, MD/North East). Neither team would score until junior attack Kelsey Kemp (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) converted a penalty stroke with 8:15 remaining in the opening period. The Shorewomen held an 11-3 advantage in shots in the first half. The Red Devils knotted the score at 1-1 when Lizzie Boorse deflected in a ball sent into a circle by Alison Brant with 23:31 remaining in the second half, but the Shorewomen regained the lead with 19:43 left when senior attack Candace Gaull (Laurel, DE/Laurel) blasted in a pass from sophomore defender Sara Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser). The Shorewomen tacked on an insurance goal when sophomore attack Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley) scored off an assist from senior attack Jaimie Barlow (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) with 4:58 to play. Spare added her second defensive save of the game on a shot by Dickinson's Amanda Zavada with 1:48 to play. Washington held a 19-7 advantage in shots in the game and a 13-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Elena Nicholoff (Tunkhannock, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made two saves for the Shorewomen, while Amanda West made eight stops for Dickinson. The Shorewomen will head to Ursinus College Saturday to play the top-seeded Bears in an 11:00 a.m. semifinal game.
