2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD The Washington College women's basketball team set the Centennial Conference record for steals in a game with 39 as the Shorewomen downed visitng Valley Forge Christian College, 97-24, on Thursday evening at the Cain Athletic Center in non-conference action. The Shorewomen are now 7-1 overall, their best overall start in the program's history, while the Patriots drop to 3-11. The 39 steals breaks the conference record set by Muhlenberg who recorded 35 steals against Washington on January 5, 2004. The Shorewomen led 7-4 with 13:58 remaining in the first half, before rolling off 17 straight points to take a 24-4 lead with 8:32 to go in the opening half. The Shorewomen took a 43-10 lead into halftime and saw the lead grow to as big as 73 points in the second half. Washington shut out VFCC for the final 7:28 of the contest. Washington's junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) led all players with 22 points, while senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/Pius X) tied her career-best with 20 points and swiped a career-high seven steals. Senior guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) netted a personal best 15 points, while freshman forward Meghan Lepley (Baldwin, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) netted her first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, both all-time highs for her. Her 12 boards led all players. Junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) and freshman guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) each dished out nine assists and totaled six steals. Jamrogowicz set a career mark is assists and tied her best in steals, while Tait set personal highs in both assists and steals. Sophomore forward Erin Mazzatta (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) rejected a career-high three shots, while junior forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) tallied a career-best eight steals. Mazzatta and Sherwood were game leaders in blocks and steals respectively. Amanda Parr led the Patriots with nine points and nine rebounds. Washington forced 59 VFCC turnovers in the game and totaled 60 points off turnovers. The Shorewomen outscored the Patriots in the paint by a 50-16 margin, 26-4 in fast-break points and 24-4 in second chance points. WC held a 49-34 edge on the boards. The 97 points for the Shorewomen tie them for program's high for points in a regulation game. It is the third time Washington has netted 97 points, doing so versus Trinity (DC) in a 97-14 win on December 14, 1993 and against Bryn Mawr in a 97-20 triumph on January 24, 2001. It is the most points scored by Washington since a 101-98 triple overtime victory against Western Maryland on Februay 17, 2001. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference action. |
