18, 2009 SWARTHMORE, PA Host Swarthmore College got a career-high 22 points from Melissa Grigsby in a 58-53 Centennial Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Washington College tonight in Swarthmore, PA. Junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) broke Washington's single-season assist record in the loss for the Shorewomen (10-14, 5-12 Centennial). Swarthmore (12-12, 9-8) led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Shorewomen scored the final five points of the period to trim the margin to 31-28 at the break. Washington twice cut the lead to one point early in the second half, but the Garnet scored six of the next eight points to take a 43-36 lead on a jumper by Genny Pezzola with 13:55 remaining. The Garnet led by at least three points the rest of the way and by as many as 11 later in the half. Grigsby shot 9-of-15 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc, and 2-of-2 at the free throw line en route to her 22 points. Kathryn Stockbower added 12 points and a game-best 13 rebounds, while Ceylan Bodur tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Jamrogowicz dished out her school record-breaking 146th assist of the season with 15:03 remaining in the first half when she found freshman forward Meghan Lepley (Baldwin, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) for a jumper. Jamrogowicz finished the game with seven assists to go along with 12 points and seven rebounds, upping her season total to 151. The previous Washington College single-season assist record of 145 was set by Yianna Patronas during the 2002-03 season. Lepley matched her career high with 14 points in the loss for Washington and also collected 10 rebounds. Senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) contributed 10 points for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen close out the 2008-09 season Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game against Johns Hopkins. |
