2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD Nicole Rizzo converted visiting Swarthmore's only three-pointer of the game with 41 seconds left - and it proved to be the game-winner - as the Garnet upended host Washington College, 58-53, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight at Cain Athletic Center. The Garnet improved to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 8-5 and 3-4 with the loss. The Shorewomen used a 14-0 run in the first half to take a 22-12 lead on a jumper by freshman guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) with 7:47 left in the opening period. Washington brought a 28-21 lead into the intermission after neither team scored during the final 3:17 of the half. The Garnet opened the second half with a 26-9 run as Kathryn Stockbower scored 15 of Swarthmore's points during that stretch. Swarthmore opened up a 46-37 lead on a lay-up by Ceylan Bodur with 8:07 remaining. The Shorewomen responded with a 16-5 spurt, capped of by a three-pointer from senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/Pius X) with 2:16 left, to take a 53-51 lead. Ceylan Bodur knotted the game at 53-53 with a lay-up for Swarthmore 27 seconds later. Neither team scored again until Rizzo connected on her three-pointer to give the Garnet a 56-53 advantage. The Shorewomen came up empty on their next two possessions and a pair of free throws by Pamela Costello with 16 seconds on the clock sealed the win for Swarthmore. Stockbower led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds in the win for the Garnet. Bodur added 15 points, while Melissa Grigsby dished out six assists. Tait led the Shorewomen with 13 points, while Slizofski added 12 points and a team-best eight boards. Junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) finished with seven points, six assists, and a game-high five steals for Washington. Swarthmore shot 47% from the field in the game, including 56% in the second half, while Washington shot 31%. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Bryn Mawr. |
