25, 2008 SALISBURY, MD Visiting Washington College outscored host Salisbury, 39-25, in the second half to post a 68-58 victory over its Delmarva rival on Tuesday evening at the Maggs Center. The Shorewomen improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Sea Gulls fall to 0-5. The Shorewomen jumped out of the gate with an 11-2 run in the first 4:08 of the second half to take a 40-35 lead. Washington took a 36-35 lead on three free throws by junior guard Jane ODonnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic). After a jumper by senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) gave the guests a 38-35 lead, sophomore forward Nicole Wojtusik (Washington Boro, PA/Penn Manor) capped the run with a layup. Salisbury would score six of the next eight points to trim the lead to 42-41 with 14:21 left in the game as Johnson netted five of the six points. Washington led 46-45 when they scored the next six points to take a 52-45 lead with 8:50 left on a trifecta by ODonnell. Salisbury cut it to 52-47 before the guests rolled off eight straight points to make it 60-47 with just 5:10 remaining on a score by freshman guard Deanna Dydynski (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron). Salisbury would get as close as 10 points the rest of the way, but would draw no closer. In the opening 20 minutes, Washington jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first 8:12. Slizofski scored 11 of the Shorewomens 15 points. Her 11 points led all players in the opening half. The Sea Gulls would respond with a 16-5 run to take a 25-20 lead with 5:44 to go in the first stanza. Salisbury took its first lead at 23-20 with 6:22 to go in the first on a three-pointer by Katherine Curran and Kylie Hall capped the run on a jumper with 5:44 remaining. Senior guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) cut the Salisbury lead to 31-29 with 40 seconds left in the first half on a jump shot, but Salisburys Janay Johnson responded with a two-pointer with 17 ticks left on the clock to give the hosts a 33-29 lead at intermission. For the Shorewomen, ODonnell led all players with 18 points and was one of three WC players to reach double-figures. Slizofski netted 15 points and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds, while Dydynski tallied 10 points. ODonnell and junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) each had a five assists to lead all players. Jamrogowicz had a career-best six steals in the triumph. For the Sea Gulls, Glen Charlton had a team-high 15 points, while Johnson added 12 points and a squad-leading eight rebounds. Johnson and Meghan Dunn had two blocks each. Washington returns to action on December 2 with a 7:00 p.m. tip at Ursinus in its Centennial Conference opener. |
