14, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD Visiting McDaniel College ended the game on a 22-7 run to rally past host Washington College en route to a 77-68 Centennial Conference women's basketball victory this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Green Terror (13-10, 11-6 Centennial) got a game-high 24 points from Ali Moreland in the win, while junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) tied her own school record with 12 assists in the loss for the Shorewomen (10-13, 5-11). McDaniel opened up a 25-16 lead with 7:11 left in the opening half before the Shorewomen went on a 20-6 run to surge ahead, 36-31, on a lay-up by junior forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) with 1:38 remaining. McDaniel scored the last four points of the period to pull within a point at 36-35 at halftime. The Green Terror scored the first bucket of the second half to take a brief 37-36 lead, but a 12-2 run by the Shorewomen gave Washington a 48-39 edge with 15:55 remaining. The Shorewomen held a 61-55 lead with under eight minutes remaining before seven straight points from McDaniel gave the Green Terror a 62-61 lead on a pair of free throws by Moreland with 5:38 left. Washington briefly regained the lead on a pair of free throws by senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) with 5:20 to play and two more from junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 4:46 left, giving the Shorewomen a 65-62 advantage. McDaniel scored the next six points to gain a 68-65 lead on a jumper by Meredith Larsen with 3:20 left, but a three-pointer by Jane O'Donnell 15 seconds later tied the game at 68-68. Larsen knocked down another jumper on the Green Terror's next possession to give McDaniel the lead for good at 70-68 with 2:38 to play. McDaniel got a pair of free throws from Kimberly Acton with 1:51 left to make it a two-possession lead and a lay-up from Sally Grace with 58 seconds to go to build a six point cushion. The Green Terror added three free throws in the final seconds to provide the final margin. Moreland's 24 points came on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting at the free-throw line. She also handed out four assists and swiped a game-best five steals. Grace scored 17 points off the McDaniel bench, hitting four of her five three-point field-goal attempts. Larsen added 12 points, while Ashley Lyles finished with 11 points and three blocks. Jamrogowicz's 12 assists tied the single-game school record she set during a 63-51 win over Franklin & Marshall on January 10th. She has now dished out 144 assists this season, one shy of the single-season school record set by Yianna Patronas during the 2002-03 season. Slizofski paced the Shorewomen in scoring with 18 points, while Jane O'Donnell netted 17 points in the loss. McDaniel committed 13 turnovers to Washington's 22, leading to a 30-10 advantage in points off turnovers for the Green Terror. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore. |
