2009 BALTIMORE, MD Lyndsay Burton led all players with 18 points and four steals, while Kristin Phillips tallied a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as host Johns Hopkins downed visiting Washington College, 73-56, on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference women's basketball action at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays improve to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while the Shorewomen fall to 9-7 and 4-6 respectively. Washington jumped out to an early 13-8 lead in the first 6:24 of the game which was capped on a fast-break layup from senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) off of a touchdown pass from junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace). The Shorewomen eventually built up the lead to 18-12 on a jumper by freshman forward Meghan Lepley (Baldwin, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) with 10:49 remaining in the first half. Johns Hopkins would net the next nine points to take a 21-18 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the opening half. The run was ended on a Jamrogowicz layup to cut the lead to 21-20. The Blue Jays would respond with the next six points to grab a 27-20 lead with 5:19 left in the first half. Following a timeout by the Shorewomen, the guests would respond would respond with a 15-0 run to regain the lead. The visitors evened the score at 27-27 on a traditional three-point play by Lepley and took the lead at 30-27 with freshman guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) drained a triple from senior guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding). Washington continued its run when junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) hit a three to make it 33-27 guests. Tait canned two free throws to make it 35-27 to cap the the 15-0 run. Hopkins scored six of the final eight points to cut its halftime deficit to 37-33. Washington led 43-38 early in the second half, before back-to-back steals and layups by Burton trimmed the guests lead to 43-42 with 13:52 left in the tilt. Johns Hopkins would even it at 45-45 on a three from Stephanie Fong with 12:59 remaining in the game. The hosts capped its 10-2 run to take a 48-45 lead on a three from Caitlin Sloane with 12:16 to go in the contest. After Tait responded with a three to level the score at 48-48 with, Hopkins countered with seven consecutive points to grab a 55-48 lead to ignite the decisive 20-4 run to give the Blue Jays a 68-52 cushion with 1:52 left in the game. The hosts eventually built the lead to 73-54 in the final minute. The Blue Jays held the Shorewomen to 4-for-23 (17%) in the final 20 minutes. For Washington, Jane O'Donnell netted a team-high 17 points, while Tait chipped in with 10 points. Lepley grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and added nine points. Johns Hopkins shot 48% from the field to Washington's 32%. The Blue Jays outrebounded the Shorewomen by a 43-36 margin. Johns Hopkins netted 22 second-chance points to just seven for Washington. The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Gettysburg to take on the Bullets. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m. |
