January 10,
2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD Junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) dished out a school-record tying 12 assists to go along with 18 points and a career-high eight steals to lead host Washington College to a 63-51 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall College in Centennial Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen extended their best-ever start to a season by improving to 8-1 overall and matched their best-ever start in Centennial play by improving to 3-1 in conference games. F&M (5-6, 3-2) held an early 13-9 lead with 12:48 remaining in the opening half, but the Shorewomen outscored the Diplomats, 28-11, the rest of the period to take a 37-24 lead into the intermission. The Shorewomen picked up where they left off to start the second half, going on a 16-5 run to open the period and take a 53-29 lead on a Jamrogowicz three-pointer with 13:45 to go. Washington went cold on the offensive end following the big run, scoring just five points in the next 11:51, but the Shorewomen's defense held the Diplomats at bay. The closest F&M would get came on a lay-up by Megan Pauley with 13 seconds left that trimmed the margin to 10 points at 61-51. Jamrogowicz's 12 assists matched the school record set by Elise Conway at Franklin & Marshall on January 12, 2008 and was one shy of the Centennial Conference record. Junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added 18 points of her own in the win, while senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/Pius X) finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Washington did an outstanding job containing reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Year Sarah Meisenberg, limiting her to eight points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 shooting at the free throw line to go along with seven turnovers. No Diplomat reached double figures in scoring in the contest as Meisenberg, Amanda Miceli, and Beth Holt shared team-high scoring honors with eight a piece. The Shorewomen, whose win today was their second against F&M in their last 15 meetings, return to action Monday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Delmarva rival Wesley College. |
