13, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD Host Washington College had four players score in double figures en route to an 82-51 victory over visiting Bryn Mawr in Centennial Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in the team's home opener. The Shorewomen improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Owls slipped to 1-6 and 0-4 respectively with the loss. Washington is 4-1 overall for the first time since 1995-96 and 2-1 in conference play for the first time since 1997-98. Washington, who never trailed in the game, took the lead for good when junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) drained a three-pointer to give the Shorewomen an 18-15 lead with 7:45 to go in the opening half. WC led 22-21 with 5:53 left in the stanza, before going on a 14-0 late in the first half to assert control of the contest. Freshman guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) canned a three-pointer to ignite the run and give the hosts a 25-21 lead. Following an Owl turnover, freshman forward Meghan Lepley (Baldwin, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) hit a layup in the paint to make it 27-21. Senior guard Christie Rogers (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) would score eight of the next nine points in the game to give the Shorewomen a 36-21 lead with 1:31 to go in the opening half. Washington took a 36-23 lead into the break. In the second half, the Shorewomen led 45-29 with 16:12 to go and used a 12-2 run to take a 57-31 lead with 12:01 left in the contest. Bryn Mawr would close it to 20 at 57-37 with 10:08 remaining in the tilt, but would draw no closer. For the Shorewomen, O'Donnell and senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) each netted 16 points to lead Washington. Rogers added 13 points and Tait chipped in twith 12 points. Junior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) dished out a career-best eight assists in the win. Tait grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and junior forward Julie Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) netted four steals to tie her career-high. Jamrogowicz and Tait each tallied three steals on the day. For the Owls, Shanika Bridges-King led all players with 20 points, while Jessica Allen had a game-high nine rebounds. Allen also had four steals, while Bridges-King and Emilie Naccarato each passed out a team-best five assists. Washington shot 43% from the field in the game, while Bryn Mawr shot 40% from the floor. The Shorewomen shot 48% (12-for-25) from three-point range in the triumph. Washington scored 28 points off of 26 Bryn Mawr turnovers and outscored the guests 17-4 in second chance points. The Shorewomen held a 38-30 edge on the boards. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference tilt against Lebanon Valley. |
