2008 SWARTHMORE, PA Senior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out seven assists, and swiped four steals as visiting Washington College topped host Swarthmore College, 81-71, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight in Tarble Pavilion. The Shorewomen improved to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play with the win, while the Garnet fell to 4-11 and 1-8. Swarthmore jumped out to an early 14-7 lead before an 18-6 Washington run gave the Shorewomen a 25-20 lead following a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 7:55 left in the period. The Garnet tied the score twice later in the half, but Washington scored eight of the final 12 points of the period to take a 39-35 lead into the intermission. The Garnet opened the second half with a 13-7 spurt to take a 48-46 lead on a lay-up by Kathryn Stockbower with 15:30 remaining. Washington scored the next six points to regain the lead, but Swarthmore tied things up at 52-52 on a lay-up by Ceylan Bodur with 10:13 to go. The Shorewomen then reeled off a 20-5 run to take a 72-57 lead. Sophomore guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) nailed three three-pointers during the run; her third capped off the run with 4:26 remaining. The Garnet scored the next six points, but Conway stole the ball on Swarthmore's next possession and later found O'Donnell for a lay-up to put the lead back in double figures at 74-63 with 3:01 to play. Washington led by at least 10 points the rest of the way. Conway led four Shorewomen in double figures as O'Donnell added 17 points, Jamrogowicz matched her career high with 15 points, and senior forward Brenda Lucas (New London, PA/Avon Grove) tossed in 10. Jamrogowicz was 4-of-5 from the floor, including a perfect 3-of-3 from long range, and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Stockbower turned in an impressive performance in defeat, scoring a career-high 34 points and hauling down 17 rebounds, 11 of them on the offensive end. She was 12-of-22 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Karen Berk added 16 points, eight boards, and three steals for the Garnet. Washington shot 45% from the field and 7-of-18 from three-point range in the game. In the second half, Washington was 4-of-7 from long range. Swarthmore shot 38% from the field and missed all 10 of its three-point attempts. The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Bryn Mawr. |
