K. Lee With 15 Kills and 12 Digs For Fifth Double-Double of the Season
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill) netted her fifth double-double of the season with a match-best 15 kills to go along with 12 digs as host Washington College swept visiting Bryn Mawr, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-12), on Thursday evening in a Centennial Conference volleyball match. The Shorewomen improve to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Owls drop to 4-8 and 0-1 respectively.
With the win, Washington wins its first home opener since September 1, 2007 when it topped Cabrini in three sets (30-27, 30-14, 30-27) and the first victory in a conference opener since September 21, 2004 when the Shorewomen downed Swarthmore in five sets (30-22, 19-30, 30-22, 23-30, 15-12). It is just the second conference opening win for the team since 1996. The squad won their first four Centennial Conference openers from 1993-96.
In the first set, Washington led 19-18 before scoring six of the final eight points to capture the set. A kill by Kristin Lee clinched the opening set for Washington as the Shorewomen hit .333 in the set.
The second set saw the Shorewomen turn a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead with six straight points and never trailed again in the set, capping the run on a bad set by the Owls. An attack miscue by Bryn Mawr clinched the second set for the hosts.
In the third and final set, Washington won the first eight points with a bad set by the visitors closing the run. The Owls got it to 12-7 on an assisted block by Rachel Ofili and Ellen Chiu. However WC took back control of the set with six straight points to take an 18-7 lead on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach). A service ace by junior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) clinched the third set and the match.
In addition to Kristin Lee, sophomore libero Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had 13 digs to lead all players, while White notched her fifth double-double with a match-high 26 assists and 11 digs. Senior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) had four blocks to lead all players. The Shorewomen hit .296 as a team, including .346 in the third set, totaled six blocks and had five service aces in the victory.
Danielle Preziuso led the Owls with 17 assists, while Ofili had a team-high eight kills and tied Jenny Lee for tops in the match with four blocks. Bryn Mawr had six blocks and aces in the match, but hit just .069.
The Shorewomen return to the court on Saturday with a home tri-match versus Gettysburg and Stevenson. The team hosts Gettysburg in a conference match at noon, while playing Stevenson at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference match. Gettysburg and Stevenson play the middle match at 2:00 p.m.
