Weaver & McIntyre Win at #1 Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Haverford College, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Fords improved to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-11 and 0-8 with the loss.
The Fords registered the first point of the match when Robyn Himelstein and Kate Donches defeated senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Haverford's second point came on an 8-1 win by Abby Payson and Jessica Liu against sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) at No. 3. Washington got on the board with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles by sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), the region's 13th-ranked doubles team, over Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara.
A 6-0, 6-0, win by Abbey Flynn over Benitez at No. 6 singles and a 6-1, 6-0, victory for Himelstein against Evans at No. 3 extended the Fords' lead to 4-1. Donches then clinches the win by completing her 6-0, 6-2, in over Stevens at No. 4. Payson tacked on a 6-1, 6-0, victory against Valerio at No. 5. At No. 2, Ferrara claimed the point after she won the first set, 6-4, before McIntyre retired. Gallagher finished things off with a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Weaver, ranked 10th in the region in singles, at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Gettysburg.
