FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The University of Mary Washington, ranked sixth in Division III and 21st in the Atlantic South region, blanked visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match today in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles improved to 14-6 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-9 with the loss.
Mary Washington's Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris lived up their top regional ranking with an 8-4 win over sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), the region's 13th-ranked tandem, at No. 1. Alex Ritter and Alina Suyama added an 8-0 win over senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) at No. 2, while Mackenzie Smith and Michaela Dowd won by an identical score over sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) at No. 3.
Raulston aded a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 1 singles over Weaver in a battle between the region's 13th (Raulston) and 10th-ranked (Weaver) singles players. Harris, ranked 16th in the region, defeated McIntyre, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Smith topped Evans, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3, while Ritter topped Stevens, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. Christina Gaul and Berri Flood won by identical 6-0, 6-0, counts over Valerio and Benitez at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference home match against Salisbury.
