Weaver Wins in Singles & Doubles for Shorewomen
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Host Christopher Newport University topped visiting Washington College, 5-2, in a non-conference women's tennis match today at Centre Court Racquet Club. The match was played to decision due to court time restraints. The Captains upped their record to 3-6 with the win, while the Shorewomen suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 2-1.
Sophomores April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) posted an 8-3 win over Jodi Noland and Katie Carlson for the Shorewomen at No. 1, but the Captains won at the other two doubles spots to take a 2-1 lead. Jackie Gaine and Logan Eldridge bested sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-6, at No. 2 and Kelsey Clark and Anna Chekalkina downed senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-2, at No. 3.
Weaver picked up Washiington's second point by rolling to a 6-0, 6-0, win over Noland at No. 1 singles. The Captains, however, won at the other three of the first four singles matches to finish to polish off the victory. Eldridge beat McIntyre, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2, Gaine downed Kang, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3, and Carlson blanked Evans, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4.
The Shorewomen return to action March 22nd with their home and Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. match against Dickinson.
