Evans, Valerio Pick Up First Collegiate Singles Wins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Visiting Washington College won all six singles matches in straight sets to post an 8-1 non-conference women's tennis victory over host Virginia Wesleyan this afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Shorewomen (2-0) won at the top two doubles spots in the match to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) beat Mia Proctor and Hannah Parent, 8-2, at No. 1, while sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) won by an identical score over Hannah Rice and Lisa Nguyen at No. 2. The Marlins (1-6) turned the tables at No. 3 where Marisa Cifuentes and Sydney Charity topped senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-2.
Weaver rolled past Proctor, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while McIntyre got the better of Parent, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Kang topped Cifuentes, 7-6(5), 6-0, at No. 3, Evans beat Rice, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4, Stevens defeated Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and Valerio defeated Charity, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6. The singles wins for Evans and Valerio were the first of their collegiate varsity careers.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Christopher Newport.
