Kang Clinches Win with Victory at No. 3 Singles
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Washington College women's tennis team picked up a win in its first dual match of the season this afternoon, defeating host St. Mary's College of Maryland, 5-4, in non-conference action.
The Shorewomen got off to a quick start as sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) beat Shannon Ramsey and Emily Stumpfig, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles and sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) beat Lauren Rost and Mollie Johnson, 8-1, at No. 2. St. Mary's (0-2) picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as Emily Rost and Kayla Baier were 8-4 winners over senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South).
McIntyre defeated Stumpfig, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and Weaver beat Ramsey, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 to up the margin to 4-1. Kang then clinched the match when she finished off a 6-3, 6-0, victory against Lauren Rost at No. 3. The Seahawks then won at the final three singles spots to account for the final margin. Emily Rost beat Evans, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, Johnson got the better of Stevens, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5, and Baier downed Valerio, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action Monday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Virginia Wesleyan.
