McIntyre Wins Blue 3 Draw Singles at ITA Southeast Regionals

Weaver Reaches Quarterfinals of Championship Draw Singles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) won Blue 3 Draw singles and sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) reached the quarterfinals of Championship Draw singles to lead the Washington College women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by the University of Mary Washington, this weekend.

McIntyre opened Blue 3 Draw of singles by beating Goucher's Kirsten Cianci, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and then topping Randolph-Macon's Caty-Betz Holcomb, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.  In the semifinals, McIntyre bested Brook Byrd of Christopher Newport, 8-3. In the final, McIntyre handled Roanoke's Reed Kegel, 8-1.

In Championship Draw singles, sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) cruised past Haverford's Abigail Payson, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round. In the second round, Weaver beat Shannon Libaw of Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-2, before beating Bridgewater's Katie Gordon, 6-2, 6-2, in the third round. Weaver's run ended in the quarterfinals as Amanda Austi of Johns Hopkins rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, win. 

In Blue 1 Draw singles, sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) lost to Brittney Eady of Moravian 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. She bounced back to defeat Sweet Briar's Gloria Bowman, 8-1, in the consolation quarterfinals and Christopher Newport's Angela Stallman, 8-5, in the consolation semifinal, before falling to Mary Washington's Anna Richman, 8-5, in the consolation final. 

In Blue 5 Draw singles, junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) fell to Randolph-Macon's Molly Jesseman, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round before losing to Juniata's Jackie Renninger, 8-1, in the consolation quarterfinals. 

Senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) both competed in Blue 6 Draw singles. Benitez lost to Erin Clay of Elizabethtown, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round. Stevens beat Amanda Herr of Penn State-Harrisburg, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Stevens fell to Nicole Snitzer of Elizabethtown, 8-1. In the consolation quarterfinals, Benitez lost to Juniata's Mitsuki Koh, 8-1.

In Championship Draw doubles, Weaver and Kang fell to top-seeded Patricia Kirkland and Sonja Meighan of Washington and Lee, 8-3, in the first round. In the first consolation round, Weaver and Kang beat Victoria Foanio and Brooke Ronney of Albright, 8-5. After two long rain-delayed days of competition, Weaver and Kang bowed out of the double tournament as Mary Washington's Chrissy Gaul and Richman advanced in the consolation quarterfinals via a walkover. 

In Blue 1 Draw doubles, McIntyre and Evans lost to Genevieve Francis and Aalekhya Tenali of Washington and Lee, 8-2, in the first round. In the first consolation round, McIntyre and Evans lost to Dickinson's Sydney Diamond and Claire Stoner, 8-2.

In Blue 3 Draw doubles, Stevens and Benitez advanced to the quarterfinals via walkover when their first round opponents failed to show up. In the quarterfinals, Stevens and Benitez fell to Methodist's Linsey Gabris and Samantha Munze, 8-1.
