Kang Wins in Singles and Doubles
HAVERFORD -- Host and fourth-seeded Haverford College defeated visiting and fifth-seeded Washington College, 5-3, in the first round match of the Centennial Conference Women's Tennis Tournament this afternoon in Haverford, PA. The Fords improved to 12-6 with the win and will move on the play top-seeded and defending champion Johns Hopkins in a semifinal on Saturday. The Shorewomen finish their season with a 7-11 record.
Haverford picked up the first point of the match when Rachal Torg and Kate Donches completed an 8-1 win over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 3 doubles. Washington evened the score when freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) downed Robyn Himelstein and Celia Tong, 8-5, at No. 2, but the Fords took a 2-1 lead quickly thereafter when Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher finished off an 8-4 victory over senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) at No. 1.
The Fords extended their lead to 3-1 when Donches downed Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Haverford's advantage grew to 4-1 with Himelstein's 6-0, 6-2, win over Cohen at No. 3. Kang gave the Shorewomen their first singles win of the match with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Tong at No. 4, while McIntyre followed with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Kristen Andersen at No. 5. The Fords claimed the win, however, when Ferrara completed a 6-0, 6-2, win over McNicol at No. 2.
