McIntyre Clinches Win with Victory at No. 5 Singles

GETTYSBURG, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in Centennial Conference play with a 7-2 win over host Gettysburg this afternoon.

The Bullets (8-6, 3-5) won the first point of the match when Kelsey Boyce and Meg Kelly completed an 8-3 win over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 3 doubles. Washington won the other two doubles matches, however, to take a 2-1 lead as senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) beat Caroline Haymans and Bev Keyes, 8-2, at No. 1 and freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) topped Meghan Fornshell and Laura Habecker, 8-3, at No. 2.

In singles, Washington won at each of the top five sports. Kang finished first with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Charrisha Watkins at No. 4. Weaver added a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Haymans at No. 1, while McIntyre clinched the win for the Shorewomen with a 6-0, 6-1, triumph over Boyce at No. 5. The Bullets then picked up their second point via a 6-2, 6-1, win by Keyes over Stevens at No. 6. Cohen out-lasted Habecker, 6-3, 16-, 10-5, at No. 3 and McNicol edged Kelly, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8, at No. 2 to provide the final margin.

The Shorewomen close out their regular season Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against McDaniel.
