McIntyre, Cohen Win in Singles for Shorewomen
SALISBURY, MD -- Host Salisbury University swept doubles and won four of the six singles matches to post a 7-2 non-conference women's tennis win over visiting Washington College this afternoon. The Sea Gulls, who are ranked seventh in the Atlantic South region, improved to 18-2 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 5-10 with the loss.
The Sea Gulls got an 8-3 win by Jessica Babyak and Victoria Handlin over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 3 doubles, an 8-3 victory by Roxanne Alban and Natalie Savage over senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) at No. 1, and an 8-5 victory by Elaine Iosue and Katie Youlios over freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) at No. 2.
The Sea Gulls won the first two singles matches to finish to clinch the victory as Allison Lutz bested Stevens, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 and Iosue downed McNicol, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2. Washington got on the board when McIntyre beat Handlin, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. The Sea Gulls got their sixth points with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7, win by Youlios over Kang at No. 4, while the Shorewomen got their second when Cohen beat Alban, 7-5, 5-7, 10-8, at No. 3. Savage provided the final margin with a 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Weaver at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg.
