HAVERFORD, PA -- Host Haverford College, the 11th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, topped visiting Washington College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Haverford, PA. The Fords improved to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 5-9 and 3-5 with the loss.
Haverford won two out of the three doubles matches to take an early lead as Caitlin Gallagher and Lex Ferrara, the region's ninth-ranked doubles team, beat freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School), 8-2, at No. 1, and Rachal Torg and Kate Donches beat senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 8-3, at No. 3. Washington got the win at No. 2 as freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) were 8-4 winners over Robyn Himelstein and Celia Tong.
In singles, Haverford claimed wins at the top three spots and at No. 6. Gallagher, the region's 14th-ranked player, beat Weaver, 7-5, retired, at No. 1. Ferrara bested McNicol, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2, and Himelstein downed Cohen, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3. Donches got the win at No. 6, blanking Stevens, 6-0, 6-0. Kang picked up a 6-1, 6-1, win over Torg at No. 4, while McIntyre beat Kristen Anderson, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference match at Salisbury.
